Results: Dog breeds did differ in pain sensitivity thresholds across QST methods evaluated;
however, veterinarians' pain sensitivity ratings provided minimal explanation for these
differences. Patient breed and the service they were transferred to were significantly
explanatory for the pain score assigned, as well as whether the patient received a pain
management plan and the type of pain management ordered.
Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: These findings demonstrate that dog breeds do differ in
their pain sensitivity thresholds; however, these results do not align with veterinarians' breedspecific
pain sensitivity beliefs. Further, patient breed does influence pain recognition and
treatment for canine patients.
