MUDI: A RARE HUNGARIAN HERDING BREED
An all-purpose farm dog, the Mudi evolved naturally in the
19th century from Hungarian herding stock. A courageous
working dog well-suited for handling the most stubborn
livestock and even hunting wild boar, the Mudi today is
revered for his biddability and friendly, playful disposition.
The newly recognized American Kennel Club herding breed
is an enthusiastic, highly intelligent, versatile competitor.
The sheepherding virtues of the Mudi continue in his
native Hungary where the Magyars rely on the breed to
work sheep and cattle. The medium sheepdog was produced
from crosses of Pumi, Puli and German Spitz breeds.
Around 1930, Dr. Deszö Fényesi, a museum director and
one of the first to breed Mudi separately, is credited with
naming the breed. A loyal protector and excellent watchdog,
the Mudi would alert larger flock guardians, the Kuvasz and
Komondor, when he sensed trouble.
With only a few thousand Mudi worldwide, this breed is
adept at conformation, agility, obedience, flyball, Fast CAT,
Barn Hunt, tracking, dock diving, herding, and search-andrescue
work. Males are from 16 to 18 1
/2
inches tall and weigh
from 24 to 29 pounds, and females are from 15 to 17 1/2
inches tall and weigh from 18 to 24 pounds. The breed has
a short, curly, wash-and-wear coat in multiple coat colors
and patterns and may be born with or without a tail, some
having a natural stump tail. The Mudi excels with exercise,
training and an owner dedicated to discipline.
